Day 10 – 7 July 2026 – Regensburg to Niederalteich.

Jul 7, 2026 | Moselle to Mozart

62 miles ridden – 219m climbing – temperature 28C average, 33C on arrival.

Another beautiful days cycling. The wind was stronger today and not always on our tail – it was a lot warmer than yesterday. We left Regensburg heading over a bridge – a great start.

Soon after we began our day’s zigzagging along and around the Danube. The countryside is flat and the river is huge but not as big as the sky.

Along the way we passed Walhalla – a memorial dedicated to distinguished Bavarians. It is certainly a very striking building.

Lunch was in the city of Straubing, a busy place with lots going on including us eating lunch.

Neil, Roy, Paul and I make up the ‘singles’ contingent. They are very good company both in and out of the saddle.

We cross-crossed the river a few times and the scale is incredible. This is a BIG lock:

Unusually here is a picture of me.

The afternoon had three notable non-cycling events. Two of the were where the road/cycleway we were on was closed, and although we were told there was a diversion the signs were unhelpful or absent. Fortunately Paul and Neil are good ad lib route planners and we got back on track reasonably quickly. The third event was that I got stung on my face while cycling along- fortunately I was able to keep going and with only 7 miles to go I managed to head off the swelling with Piriton once we arrived.

Afternoon tea was an extremely civilised affair outside a small country chapel in the middle of nowhere.

From here is was about 14 miles to our overnight stay in the boarding house of a Benedictine Monastery on the outskirts of Niederalteich. The room is a bit austere but it’s a decent size, has a good shower and is ‘sort of’ air-conditioned. Next to it is the Basilika St. Mauritius which is stunning.

All this in a little town with a population of about 1800 people. Amazing.
