Day 36 – 25th July – Rest Day part one

Jul 25, 2016 | USA | Across North America

As we are on the ferry tomorrow for about 5 hours, lose an hour crossing into the Eastern time zone, and have a 5:20 start on Tuesday for our 112 mile ride from Ludington to Mount Pleasant I’m not sure how much time I will have to update my blog so I am doing a bit now and hope to update with pictures from the ferry ride late tomorrow.

We have now covered 2618 miles since Astoria in Oregon on 19th June and climbed 85,000 feet – nearly three times the height of Mount Everest. The next segment to Niagara is relatively flat with the next lot of serious climbing in Vermont and New Hampshire so we have more focus on miles at the moment – we have less than 1000 miles to go.

Many of us are experiencing the same contradictive mix of emotions in that we are desperate to see our partners and families, are feeling fatigued from the physicality, are bored of wearing Lycra (and Butt Balm) but like the buzz from being together and seeing this fabulous country in the way we are.

Here’s a few pictures that have me in:

Lunch on the day of the big storm – left to right – Mark, Ron, me, and Darin

Ernie in front, me just behind (same shirt but different day!)

The clouds that delivered the bad storm we were caught up in – looks unreal doesn’t it. It’s a bit blurry because it was taken from a moving bike!

Just leaving the hotel in Sioux Falls on the first day of this segment – left to right – Darin, Darin’s wife Patti who made a surprise visit for the weekend, Murrey (1st day in van with tonsillitis), me and Heather.

My problem would be that I’d be getting off the bike to take the photo – would make a ‘cycling’ day extremely long!

You get pretty quick at ‘snapping’ photos and also making sure you really want the photo! Keep well.

It is 275 days since I posted part 1 and at least once per day ever since I have spent time wondering exactly what to say. I lived a 25 year old dream. It was every euphoric and every dull moment crammed into an 8 week journey although as many of you will recall the...
