Day 14 – 3rd July – Pocatello to Idaho Falls

Jul 3, 2016 | blog, USA | Across North America

66 miles ridden – 715 feet climbed.
Today was another great day. A late start, a good tailwind, slightly lower temperature (32C/90F by 2PM), and, because there was no point arriving at the hotel early everyone rode at a much more leisurely pace meaning there was more nattering and chatting – probably not tomorrow but that’s another day.

Thanks to Bob Mueller I have some video to upload – me you will hopefully recognise and the guy behind me is Murray:

The landscape is still very rural but today the scale was smaller. Only one long road – 12 miles – but otherwise there were lots of turns and many more houses and small communities to see. We continually meandered around the Snake River crossing it periodically until on the final bridge we arrived in Idaho Falls

There seem to be a lot of plots where a new house is near to an old house and all sorts of old cars and ‘stuff’ (cars, agricultural machinery etc) is lying around but somehow it still looks appealing

There are many complaints about the roads – chip seal they call it – but frankly they are much better in general than the roads at home and I think in over two weeks I have seen one pothole.

Tomorrow is a big day as we will be climbing over the Teton Pass which peaks at 8431 feet followed by a 5 mile steep technical descent. Some of the early trepidation has returned but we are all much better equipped to take on the challenge.

Interestingly it seems that many of us are stepping away from looking at the forthcoming day in terms of miles and moving towards looking forward to another day cycling with friends and seeing interesting things. Let’s see whether my blog tomorrow reflects this attitude after 91 miles and 6000 feet of climbing. One last picture for today

Lunch at Chilis. Air conditioning, drinks, and food.
